Wauchope
Wauchope is about 115 km south of Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory. The historic hotel was once the service point for the nearby wolfram mines and the town now provides a range of services for travellers on the Stuart Highway.
10 km north of the town lie the Devil"s Marbles - a collection of huge and ancient round granite boulders that seem to have been "put" there for a giant game of marbles. Aboriginal dreamtime stories consider them to be eggs laid by the Rainbow Serpent during the Dreamtime. They are a must see. Signs along the walkways describe how the marbles were formed by erosion in the hot and harsh desert conditions. The marbles are most spectacular viewed at sunset, when the rock picks up the colours of the setting sun, contrasting against long shadows.
Nearby Wycliffe Wells is renowned for the number of UFOs spotted - it ranks in the top 10 locations worldwide for UFO sightings. Visit the service station which has memorabilia about many of the sightings!
