Tonga is a kingdom of white sandy beaches, coconut groves and some of the best fishing in the South Pacific. Make your way around each of the three main island groups for some incredible island experiences. You could find yourself snorkelling with humpback whales, taking in a traditional dance performance, or gaining insight into the local culture with a visit to the local market in each island group.
Tongatapu Island is fit for a king – literally. The royal family lives here in the capital Nuku’alofa. Ready to explore? Seek out the mysterious Ha’amonga a’Maui Trilithon, the Stonehenge of the South Pacific. Discover the Anahulu cave, a stalactite cave with an underground swimming pool. Head south to take in the spectacle of the Mapu’a ’a Vaca blowholes.
In the water, snorkelling among coral islands is an unforgettable experience. Divers enter a whole other world at the Ha’apai Islands. Come across whales as you dive among coral reefs or see them from the surface as you kayak through uninhabited islands. The volcanic scenery of Kao and Tofua makes for some spectacular views.
Not to be outdone, the third main group, the Vava’u Islands, are picturesque at every turn. Visitors come from all around to sail tranquil waters among coral reefs. Protected coves make for perfect diving. Find restaurants and bars on Neiafu, or stay on the quieter islands where you’ll master the art of lazing in the sun.
