El Questro Station

  • El Questro Station, or to give it its true name El Questro Wilderness Park, is an oasis in the rugged and beautiful Kimberley region. Located 100 km west of Kununurra, which if travelling by road is 58 km on the sealed Great Northern Highway, the rest of the drive is on the graded gravel Gibb River Road. Kununurra is serviced by regular domestic flights from Perth, Darwin and Broome.

Not just a wilderness, El Questro is one of the world"s more unique accommodation properties - an unusual mix of remoteness and comfort. One million acres in size, with a choice of the airconditioned suites and rooms of the El Questro Homestead, the tented cabins of the Emma Gorge Resort and bungalows in the Station Township.

Given that there are one million acres, a 4WD is recommended to really get out and explore the country. While the property does provide return road transfers from Kununurra, and guided tours, it"s best that you take the opportunity of hiring a 4WD for the duration of your stay. The major car rental companies all have offices in Kununurra.

Not only is the size of the property large, so is the number of activities available to you:

  • Boating on the Chamberlain Gorge, a 3 km long fresh waterhole fringed by tropical vegetation and 60-metre tall escarpments.
  • Fish for barramundi
  • Aboriginal rock art
  • Wildlife - brumbies, wild donkeys, bustards, frilled neck lizards, goannas, sea eagles, brolgas, jabirus, technicoloured parrots, saltwater crocodiles, and more.
  • Horse treks
  • Zebedee Springs, with its Livingstonia palms and a series of thermal pools.
  • Guided tours of Emma Gorge, Champagne Springs, Chamberlain Gorge
  • Helicopter - scenic flights, gourmet picnics, freshwater and saltwater fishing tours

  • These tours, and more, are available at a cost over and above the tariff. The tariff at the El Questro Homestead includes accommodation in one of the 6 airconditioned suites or rooms, d"hôte gourmet meals, open bar and all activities within the El Questro valley. Other facilities here are swimming pool, spa, tennis court and bar.

At the Emma Gorge Resort are a restaurant, bar, swimming pool and lounge area, while the Station Township facilities include a restaurant, bar and general store.

This area of Australia has 2 seasons - the Green season, also known as the wet season, which is from November to March and the Dry season. Please note that due to the wet season the resort is closed from November to April annually. In the dry season temperatures are in the high 20s Celsius to the low 30s, with cool evenings.

Those wanting to visit El Questro and Emma Gorge just for the day can purchase a Wilderness Pass permit from the reservations office in Tourism House, Kununurra. The pass entitles you to visit all the natural attractions within the property.

Guided tours are also available, at an additional cost to the Wilderness pass, which include road transfers, gorge walks, Zebedee Thermal Springs, lunch at the Steakhouse Restaurant and a boat trip on the Chamberlain River.
