Karuah

A peaceful village at the mouth of the Karuah River, the western end of Port Stephens. Since the Pacific Highway bypass opened in late 2004, Karuah has reinvented itself as a service town 2 and a quarter hours north of Sydney. The residents welcome visitors and provide a range of businesses to service your visit. From the short 'driver reviver' stop to that short break or a well-earned holiday, Karuah has a diverse range of accommodation and restaurants and cafes. Sitting either side of the Karuah River, the village is linked by the old Pacific Highway. The river provides focus on recreational activities for residents and visitors. Relax in a riverside park complete with wharf, tidal pool, and view adjacent wetlands and oyster farms. The town also has an excellent golf course and the newly appointed RSL hosts lawn bowls. The river is also a popular fishing spot and the area is awash with stories of the big Jewfish that didn't get away. Each April sees the Annual Karuah Aquatic and Oyster Festival, featuring oyster opening, wood chopping, markets, music and boat racing.
