Childers

While it might be largely dependent on the juice of the cane, Childers, 325 kilometres north of Brisbane, is not your regular Queensland sugar town.

What sets this town apart is the distinct possibility that it boasts Australia's only pharmaceutical museum. The museum houses the pills, potions, phials and other fascinating paraphernalia collected during a lifetime by Thomas Gaydon, who operated Childers" only chemist shop from 1894 until his death in 1935.

Although the business eventually passed out of the Gaydon family's hands, the subsequent owners had a sense of history and faithfully retained Gaydon's tools, equipment and records, which are now in the stewardship of the local council.

The council has also been at the core of the emotional recovery program introduced after the entire Childers community was traumatised when 15 young backpackers died in a hostel fire which police claim was deliberately lit in a hostel in June, 2000.
