Pomona

The 439 metre Mt Cooroora dominates this small, Sunshine Coast hinterland town in more ways than one. Not only does it cast a constant shadow on the village, but each July it draws some of the world's finest endurance athletes to Pomona for the King of the Mountain race and festival.

At the other end of the social spectrum, Pomona claims Queensland's oldest, continuously-operating cinema, the Majestic Theatre. The Majestic, which is approaching its centenary, also houses a cinema museum and hosts an annual film festival.

Lake Cootheraba, 18 km to the north, is the saltwater lake on the Noosa River where Eliza Fraser was held captive by local Aborigines for two months after surviving the shipwreck of the Stirling Castle on Fraser Island in 1836.

Today the Noosa Heads hinterland is rapidly becoming a magnet for people looking for a bush retreat that not only offers bushland privacy but proximity to "civilisation". The Pomona region, with its secluded home sites just 25 minutes from the beach and within commuting distance of Brisbane, fits the bill.
