Tagged the 'great little outback town', Hawker is a central hub for forays into the Flinders Ranges.

Sitting astride the junction of roads from Port Augusta, Orroro and Leigh Creek, Hawker is the ideal base for half-day and full-day trips to such tourist icons as Wilpena Pound, the Flinders Ranges National Park and the Moralana scenic loop.

Yourambulla Caves feature significant Aboriginal art while the historic Kanyaka ruins can be seen on the road to Quorn. Jarvis Hill features a walking trail and lookout.

The once-a-year Hawker races are staged in May and the annual Art Exhibition in September attracts visitors from far and wide.

But if you want to park the car for a couple of days, Hawker has its own rewards in a range of heritage buildings that include fascinating examples of corrugated iron pioneer shops and buildings.

An Elder Terrace tour also presents surprises in the form of rock carvings mounted in a number of gardens. The rocks were carved in 1997 during the Opera in the Outback week of functions in Hawker, Quorn and Blinman.
