Wilpena

Wilpena Pound is in the heart of the Flinders Ranges National Park. It is a unique rock amphitheatre with just a single entrance, through a narrow canyon and across Sliding Rock.

It can only be explored by foot, and there are many well-marked graded bushwalks, including one to St Mary Peak, the pound"s highest point. Visitors will be amazed at the plentiful wildlife and abundant vegetation. The peaks surrounding the pound change colour with the changing light conditions and are a magnet for photographers. There are Aboriginal rock paintings at Sacred Canyon and Arkaroo Rock.

The National Parks visitor centre at Wilpena Pound is well worth a visit. Not only can the staff give up-to-date information about walking tracks, bird and animal life and suggest places to visit within the park, they can also book tours, including scenic flights and 4WD tours.

The resort near the entrance to Wilpena Pound is powered by the largest solar power array in the Southern Hemisphere and tours are available.

Things to do:

  • Walking in the pound and surrounding area
  • View the pound from an alternative perspective - either by 4WD tour or with a scenic flight
  • Watch the changing colours of the surrounding cliffs and try to capture the effects on camera
  • Tour the solar power array at the resort
