Mount Schank

Mount Schank is a highly prominent volcanic cone located 17 kilometres south of Mount Gambier on route to Port MacDonnell. It is generally regarded as the youngest volcano in Australia and thought to be active only some 2,000 years ago and is still classified as not extinct.

The main crater has always been dry but a small crater on the southern slopes once held three metres of water, teamed with fish and contained a floating island. It dried up in the 1940s. Mount Schank Quarries has a lease on land on the western side of the mountain and provides crushed metal for road making throughout the lower South East of South Australia. Rocks from this quarry were used in the construction of the breakwater at Port MacDonnell.
