Point Lonsdale

A seaside resort on the southern coast of the Bellarine Peninsula, Point Lonsdale is invariably mentioned in the same breath as the historic town of Queenscliff with which it shares guardianship of the notorious Rip.

The Rip is the unpredictable stretch of water at the narrow entrance to Port Phillip Bay. You can watch ships entering and leaving Port Phillip Bay run the gauntlet of the turbulent cross-currents from the Rip View Lookout, while the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse reserve presents sweeping views of the town and neighbouring Queenscliff, Barwon Heads and Point Nepean.

Both Point Lonsdale and Queenscliff are living monuments to early Victorian links with the sea and there is no better place to get a handle on the region's heritage than at the Queenscliff Maritime Centre.

While Queenscliff keeps serious and amateur historians on their toes, Point Lonsdale offers the visitor a more relaxed ambience. Just 27km south-east of Geelong, the town has been developed as a beachside playground for city folk and offers fine surfing beaches. Regular passenger and vehicular ferries link the Bellarine and Mornington peninsulas.
