Yering

Yering is a small parish in the heart of the Yarra Valley, just an hour from Melbourne. The Yarra Valley has long been a popular retreat for hassled city dwellers, with its serene rural outlooks, the meandering Yarra River and, more recently, the resurgence of the Yarra Valley wine district.

Wine making commenced in the area as far back as the 1850s, but became economically unviable. The land was returned to other farming uses and it is only in the last 20 years that vineyards have been replanted and new wineries have sprung up.

There is a wide range of wines being made locally, including sparkling wines, reds and whites. Many of the wineries offer tastings and cellar door sales. Several wineries stage musical events - opera, jazz and so on - or cooking events during the year.

As is often the case in wine districts, there are a fair few delightful restaurants, some located in wineries. They offer the freshest local ingredients and of course a winelist that"s heavy on the local produce.

Festivals: Yarra Valley Grape Grazing Festival (March) - top food, top music and top wines
