Kookynie

The small goldfields town of Kookynie is located two hours' drive north of Coolgardie or ten hours east of Perth. Kookynie is an authentic, living 'ghost town', not to be missed if visiting the Northern Goldfields. This is true outback Australia. In 1905 it was home to 1500 people with six hotels, electric street lights, public baths, a brewery and many brick buildings. Today there is only the one working pub and a population of approximately 15 people. The hotel offers an excellent collection of historic photographs, antique bottles and memorabilia from Kookynie's past. The Old Miner's Cottage is the last timber and iron building remaining in Kookynie from the turn of the 1900s and along with the Grand Hotel, old shops and the Cosmopolitan Hotel ruins, are the only remaining structures left offering a glimpse of its past. Dine in one of Australia's true outback pubs located in a mining ghost town. Enjoy a cold beer and game of pool or darts in the hotel. The hotel also caters for overnight guests. Nearby is the historic Niagara Dam. Constructed by the Railways Department in 1898, the intention was that the dam would provide plentiful fresh water for the locomotives that would soon be steaming along the new railway linking Kalgoorlie with Menzies. For over a century this oasis in the wilderness has provided a picnic, swimming and camping spot for visitors and locals alike. The dam took its name from the nearby town of Niagara, which was booming at the time of the dam's construction.
