Laverton
Located about 125 kilometres east of Leonora, and around a 12 hour drive northeast of Perth, lies the early goldmining town of Laverton. Laverton almost became a ghost town when the gold ran out. Luckily, nickel was discovered and the mining industry was restored. Nickel mining ceased in 1994 and $4 million has since been spent rehabilitating the area and establishing the Windarra Heritage Trail. This modern heritage trail stands in unique contrast with the old mine shafts scattered throughout the area. Please note: - There is current mining activity where the Windarra Heritage Trail and Golden Quest Discovery Trail site is and therefore access is temporarily limited. In a quiet back street, on the land where it was originally built, is Laverton's oldest tourist attraction. The police complex comprises of the Station, Sergeant's House and Jail. A simple visit places you in a world very far from today. With cramped conditions exposing cell mates to the harsh desert environment the jail is an ominous reminder of rough times. Even the items on display in the Police Station take tourists on a journey that ranges for more than 100 years. Acknowledging alternative forms of economy Laverton has embraced tourism with the commencement of Four Wheel Drive trails and tours bringing isolation, relaxation and memories of long-forgotten gold-rushes to Australian and international tourists every year. Extensive work on the Great Central Road has created the third strategic link for tourists and produce, joining Western Australia with the rest of the continent. More remote roads stem from Laverton with the Anne Beadell Highway connecting into Cooper Pedy and access to the Gunbarrel Highway from the Great Central Road. Permits are required for these areas and travel advice is available from the Laverton Tourist Information Centre. Hotel, motel and caravan park accommodation is available if you are spending the night.
