Murrumburrah
First settled in the 1830s, the twin towns of Harden and Murrumburrah - 30-odd kilometres north-west along the Burley Griffin Way from Yass - are at the centre of rich stock and gain-producing country on the south-western slopes of NSW. The area's heritage is faithfully represented by the regional Historical Museum's collection which is housed in the impressive School of Arts building. The historical displays include a smithy and wheelright's workshop. Equally fascinating are the heritage displays in the oak and brass-dominated Harden railway station refreshment room precinct. The galleries include a 19th century apothecary's shop, a music room, colonial kitchen and bathroom (complete with thunderbox). The entire display is graphically complemented with an historic photograph exhibition. Although the district is recognised as a major producer of grain, oil seeds and fruit, it is also distinctive for its boutique commercial ventures. There is an asparagus plantation at Jugiong, 30km to the south, while Australia's only mustard-seed oil is produced at a plant near Wombat on the Olympic Way, while picturesque and historic Cootamundra, birthplace of the greatest batsman in the history of cricket, Donald Bradman, is within an hour's drive.
