Lawrence

If you choose to take the scenic Tourist Drive 22 between Maclean and Grafton you will encounter the quiet charm of the village of Lawrence, originally established in 1856. Lawrence is located at the junction of Sportmans Creek and the Clarence River and offers fine fishing, canoeing and plentiful bird life. The colonial style local tavern has serves the best country tucker where you can stop for lunch or dinner and the local general store has take away, groceries, liquor supplies, petrol and hair salon. Perfect for tourists-on-the-move. There is a walking track along the river bank leading from Memorial Park to the lookout on High Street. The trip is one hour return and suitable for all ages. Memorial Park has barbecues, playgrounds, toilets and is a great spot for fishing and swimming. Fancy a round of golf? Lawrence has a 9-hole golf course for you to enjoy 7 days a week. A tennis court is also available for hire through the general store. Lawrence is home to the old 2NR radio transmitter building in Merton Street which has been converted into a museum that highlights fascinating items associated with the very early years in Australian radio broadcasting. You can also visit the historic Church of England and Catholic churches both of which were built around the early 1900's. Still in full operation is the free 24-hour vehicle ferry between Lawrence and Woodford Island and is a great experience for anyone who has never experienced this antiquated mode of transport. However on a Tuesday morning from 9.00am to 11.00am the ferry is closed for maintenance. The entire area around Lawrence and Maclean is rich cane growing lands. One of the local sugar cane farms is open every Friday for visitors to inspect and gain an insight into this rural industry.
