Terania Creek

Terania Creek is famous for being the site of the first direct action taken in defence of a forest in Australia. The people of Terania Creek, a number of whom had moved to the region after the Aquarius festival in 1973 and settled in Nimbin, were the first local residents in the history of the Australian environmental movement to place themselves between a bulldozer and a forest. The protest was an important event in the campaign to gain World Heritage listing for the forests of central-eastern Australia. Spectacular Protestor Falls in The Nightcap national Park is accessible by approaching the Nightcap along Terania Creek Road (14 kilometres unsealed, narrow and rough for large vehicles) from The Channon. Two causeways are crossed so care should be taken in wet weather. From The Channon it is a 9.5 kilometres drive to the picnic area. The waterfall is only 500 meters from the picnic area. Swimming and fires are not permitted in the park - portable fuel stoves only. The Terania Creek Basin offers a wondrous diversity of flora and fauna, including over 130 species of birds. It is renowned for its beautiful palm forest. Terania Creek is a scenic 45 minute drive from Lismore, 55 minute drive from Nimbin and 1 hour 20 minutes from Byron Bay.
