Wickham

The inner Newcastle suburb of Wickham lies just 3km from the city centre between the rail line linking the city with Sydney and the busy Throsby Creek extension of Port Hunter - part one of Australia"s busiest harbours and the largest export harbour in the Commonwealth by tonnage.

Wickham itself is a proudly multicultural and egalitarian place of intensive housing and some great pubs and places to eat, right at the heart of this bustling and historic city.

The tough city of Newcastle, on the sea at the mouth of the Hunter River, 156km north of Sydney, has shown its true colours by reinventing itself as a major tourist destination after the closure of the local BHP steelworks and mighty earthquakes devastated the city - both physically and emotionally.

But Newcastle"s natural assets - which include beautiful beaches and its proximity to both the delightful Lake Macquarie and the vineyards and thoroughbred paddocks of the Hunter Valley - give this wonderful city much to build upon.

With a population of more than 250,000 people, Newcastle is the second-largest city in New South Wales and the sixth largest in Australia.
