Bombala

A typical Monaro town, Bombala presides over an area producing wool, beef, vegetables, timber and trout.

The Bombala River and its catchments of streams and creeks teem with both brown and rainbow trout and anglers can combine their favourite sport with a spot of off-road fossicking on the 57km scenic drive across the Victorian border to Bendoc Mines.

Bombala's one-hour historic walk takes in the town's heritage timber buildings which include the Old Mechanics Institute, court house and the Olympic Cinema which might have seen better days, but still gives the visitor an idea of the ornate theatres which were once widespread in rural Australian towns.

Historic regional centrepiece is Burnima, a two-storey Victorian homestead set amid pines, spruces, cedars and Canadian sugar maples on a property 6km north along the Monaro Highway from town.

You get the best perspective on this attractive, well designed town and the beauty of the surrounding countryside from the lookout in Endeavour Reserve.
