Lameroo

A Mallee Highway village 212km east of Adelaide and just a tick over 40km from the Victorian border, Lameroo sits atop a huge subterranean basin which provides the town and district with an abundant water supply.

The underground water not only irrigates the feed and seed crops, but keeps the local golf course, bowling greens, ovals and reserves green.

Dolly's Golden Rain Tree Craft and Heritage Building houses a large collection of old farming machinery and artifacts, while the restored pug and pine hut three kilometres out of town gives an insight into the life and times of the pioneering Byrne family.

Lameroo offers a comfortable base for forays into the Mallee conservation parks and reserves. Pick of the crop might be Billiat, whose 60,000ha of parkland supports a patchwork of open Mallee scrub and dunes.

Pygmy possums make occasional appearances in the scrub canopy, while the park is a sanctuary for a wide variety of bird species including the reclusive Mallee fowl.
