Paruna

The small, eastern border town of Paruna is the centre of the old Browns Well Shire serving cereal growers and graziers. Volunteers maintain the local camping ground where visitors can stopover for a token fee and the local store doubles as the district bottle shop.

Paruna folk are dependent on nearby Loxton for their major supplies. The garden centre of the Riverland, Loxton, 34km to the north, is home to an award-winning Historical Village which features a 19th century bank, school, railway station and you just follow your nose to the fresh-bread bakery. Bordering the banks of the Murray, the village is open daily.

Loxton is prone to the odd flood and 'high water' over the years is marked on the Tree of Knowledge in the Lion's Park. Across the Murray from Loxton, the Katarapko Game Reserve and Conservation Park is distinguished by shady banks, channels and lagoons that attract swimmers, kayakers, anglers and picnickers, while 150 or so different species of birds keep twitchers up to the mark.
