Edenhope

Considering that the Hope brothers, who took up land in this border area of the Wimmera in 1847, hailed from Eden in Scotland, it was inevitable that the town that developed on the shores of Lake Wallace would be called Edenhope.

Superb red gum approaches set the tone for this pleasant town of 2,200 people. Lake Wallace, a bird sanctuary, is also a popular watersports spot which attracts boaties, water skiers, sail-boarders and fishermen angling for the resident trout and redfin.

A shoreline cairn in the grounds of the local high school marks the training ground used by the members of an Aboriginal cricket team to prepare for their gruelling tour of England in 1868. The Wimmera team played an extraordinary number of 47 matches on that tour, winning 14, losing 14 and drawing 19.

Harrow, Victoria's oldest inland town, lies 32km to the east and the Naracoorte limestone caves are located in the national park 50km west of Edenhope.
