Ganmain

A small town about 50km east of Narrandera with a population of about 600, Ganmain claims the title of hay centre of Australia. And scant wonder.

Loyalty to centuries-old methods of harvesting results in the region producing the finest chaff in the land - chaff that is keenly sought by Australia's leading horse trainers and which has nourished such champions as Tulloch, Saintly, Kingstown Town, Gunsynd and Let's Elope. The operators of the major yearling sales rings are also regular buyers of Ganmain chaff.

The district produces about 9000 tonnes of this chaff a year and visitors can watch farmers practise the ancient art of sheaving, binding and stacking the hay during the harvesting season from November to late February.

The Hay Stack in Pioneer Park stands as testimony to the fact that Ganmain and the neighbouring town of Coolamon are at the centre of Australia"s hay and chaff capital territory.

Much of the regional heritage is reflected in the Ganmain Museum which is the focal point of an annual historical day.
