Hillston
Hillston was settled in 1863 on the banks of the Lachlan River. It is a rich agricultural centre, supplying food and fibre to the Australian and export markets. The township has a long main street lined with palm trees, and there are two well maintained parks that provide picnic areas with a view of the river. Hillston's booming agricultural industry has led to the opening of a number of new shops, and during harvest, the town is buzzing with people. Whilst in Hillston, there are a number of things to see and do. The Hillston Cotton Gin provides visitors with an insight into the cotton industry. The Red Dust and Paddy Melons Gallery in the main street showcases the district's talented artists and their subjects. Local art and craft is available to purchase at the Gallery. Lake Woorabinda, a man made lake, is a haven for birdlife and in summer is perfect for a cool dip or a walk along the water's edge. Step back in time at the Hillston Museum, which boasts a fascinating collection of memorabilia, or for a closer look at the Lachlan River visit the Huey Cameron Park and Swing Bridge. Take a drive out Lachlan River Road and discover some of Hillston's diverse agriculture, including an enormous cherry and potato farm. Please be mindful of private property and be careful not to trespass. Follow the heritage trail along the main street and learn of Hillston's colourful and exciting history, or visit the history room in the new WG Parker Memorial Library Complex to research your family tree. Pop in to Milne's Butchers and taste test some of their famous traditional small goods, including smoked meats using red gum sawdust sourced from the Murrumbidgee River. Willandra National Park is situated 64kms North West of Hillston. The Park features the historical Willandra Homestead, Woolshed and Ram Shed. Willandra National Park has been returned to its natural state and is a great place to view native flora and fauna. Check in at the Hillston Visitors Centre for road conditions prior to your visit. Hillston has all the services you would expect for a town of its size, including two motels, two hotels, a caravan park, and an Ex-Servicemen's Club. The main street has a number of boutique stores and shops, including a supermarket, Laundromat and chemist. Fuel and gas are available from a number of outlets.
