Bardon
One of a cluster of suburbs dotted through the green swathe which embraces Brisbane's inner-west, Bardon is part of the original settlement of Paddington.
Bardon's destiny was forged when Joshua Jeays bought 16ha of land adjoining Ithica Creek in 1862. Jeays built a grand, English-style home of rough stone, gables and casement windows and named it Bardon House after Bardon Hill in his native Leicestershire.
Fernberg House, the official home of the Queensland Governor, straddles the Bardon-Paddington border. Bardon is only 5km from the heart of Brisbane and is on a direct bus route to the city.
Paddington today presents a rich mix of standout colonial architecture - grandly represented through Victoria Army Barracks and the elegant terrace homes in Petrie Street - and the colourful chain of cafes, restaurants and hotels which anchor the night life in this part of a city which is now Australia"s third largest and second only to Sydney in its rate of growth.
