Mitchell

For so long a typical south-west Queensland town dependent on the grain, cattle and sheep grown and raised in the surrounding regions, Mitchell is a community in transition. This Maranoa River town, 568km west of Brisbane, is seeing more and more Australian and overseas visitors heeding the call of the outback. So, Mitchell is going with the flow and gearing itself to host the increasing numbers using the town as a launch pad for outback adventure. The most noticeable impact has been on the original bore site, now upgraded to the Great Artesian Spa and therapeutic centre. The delightfully landscaped aquatic centre pools with both naturally heated and cooled water. Mitchell's pride in its heritage is retained through such fine old colonial buildings as the courthouse, while the ancient bottletree standing guard over the nearby hotel still presents a unique photo opportunity. Nearby Tregole National Park presents a mosaic of mulga scrub, rolling, brigalow plains and box floodplains. The park conserves large stands of ooline trees.
