Thuringowa Central

Townsville and its satellite city of Thuringowa lie side by side in this delightful part of Queensland's dry tropics where they say the sun shines for 320 days a year. Some of the best beaches in north Queensland lie along a 100km stretch of coastline near here. Experience the Perfume Gardens and the Palmetum, where you'll find the most comprehensive collection of palms anywhere in the world amidst rainforest and savannah walks. Off Cape Bowling Green is a legendary big game fishing ground where every year awesome black marlin tease tough international fisherfolk who come in search of a record catch. Townsville grew from Cleveland Bay development which began with the first wharf on the mouth of Ross Creek in 1864 - 96 years after Cook's Endeavour sailed into the bay. Much of the modern, vibrant city's heritage is vested in the historic waterfront buildings which have been faithfully restored. Tourism-oriented businesses including nightclubs and restaurants now operate within the sandstone fabric of some of these fine old buildings. Townsville and Thuringowa are exciting to visit at any time of the year, but their charms are enhanced during warm, balmy winters.
