Bellambi

Renowned for its point break, Bellambi is one of the most popular surfing beaches on the NSW coast. And that is saying something about the quality and consistency of the waves which roll on to Bellambi beach on a stretch of the southern NSW coastline famed for its surf.

One of Wollongong's northern suburbs, Bellambi not only attracts board riders from around the world, but it also gives the visitor direct access to the green behind the Pacific blue of south coast beaches - the tree-shrouded Illawarra Escarpment with its dense rainforest, spectacular waterfalls and lookouts.

The stepping stone to the Southern Highlands, the escarpment is perfectly named - Illawarra is taken from the local Aboriginal word for a 'high and pleasant place by the sea.'

Although Wollongong is the industrial and commercial heart of the Illawarra, there are scenic walking trails in and round the city, top sporting and recreational facilities, art galleries, a science centre and much admired Botanic gardens to keep visitors thoroughly occupied.
