Kembla Heights
A burgeoning southern suburb of Wollongong, Kembla lies in the shadows of the towering and majestic Illawarra Escarpment, with the extensive Lake Illawarra lying between the town and South Pacific Ocean beaches.
Once best known for its terrific racecourse, Kembla Grange - which the aficionados call "the Randwick of the south" - and for dairy cattle, Kembla's lush acres are swiftly being transformed in a mini-housing boom.
And why wouldn't you want to live here? The lake provides great fishing, sailing, boating and swimming, plenty of great beaches are just a short drive away, and an excursion up the nearby Macquarie Pass will take you to the cool and ambient heights of the Southern Highlands.
The location of a goal terminal and loader, a 260,000-tonne grain terminal, a 800ha steel mill and cladding and fertiliser-producing plants, Port Kembla is one of the most industrialised harbours in Australia, but, as you take in the view from Tom Thumb Lookout over the port and beyond to a coast stretching north to the Royal National Park, you can appreciate that not even dark and satanic mills can mask the natural beauty of the region.
