Bruthen

The Tambo River flats town of Bruthen at the doorstep of the Snowy Mountains and ski fields grew on a stock route and was moved to its present site after a disastrous flood in 1870.

A peaceful, friendly town nestling on the Great Alpine Road at the foot of the ranges, Bruthen is the perfect spot to explore the Omeo goldfields and to wander through the local craft shops and pottery studios or to indulge yourself on the sinfully enticing cakes from the town bakery.

And you can also indulge nobler passions with a stroll through the Fairy Dell where the spectacular rainforest is dominated by lilly-pilly and tree ferns.

The Gippsland commercial centre, Bairnsdale, is 24km south-west on the Omeo Highway, separated by the scenic Tambar Valley.

Bruthen is a similar distance from the point at which the Mitchell River empties into Lake King at Eagle Point Bluff which is flanked by the world"s second longest silt jetties.
