Ensay

As you climb into the Victorian high country from the Gippsland "capital" of Bairnsdale, you come across the historic town trinity of Ensay, Swifts Creek and Omeo.

This is country challenged and occasionally tamed by gold miners and mountain drovers. It is country where you can breathe deeply on crisp air as you follow remote streams guarded by towering gums and mountain ash.

You can indulge the timeless pleasure of fly fishing or explore the goldfields of Omeo, Tongio and Cassilis and recharge the batteries in picturesque restaurants and tea rooms and a sip or two of distinctive high country wines.

And you can let your imagination run riot as you pass such fascinating sign-posted names as Monkey Creek (named, legend has it, because of the prevalence of monkey bears or koalas), 1000 Pound Bend, Piano Bridge Creek, Jew"s Pinch, Lock-up Creek, Snake"s Back, Haunted Stream, Dead Horse Flat, Battle Point and Devil"s Backbone.

Prolonged drought can hit the high country hard, but they're doughty folk and can still turn on something special for visitors.
