Orbost

Orbost has a colourful boating history, rich with stories of the steamers which once plied the lower reaches of the Snowy River hauling vegetables bound for the Melbourne market.

These days Orbost, which is only a few kilometres from the Gippsland coast, is perfectly located for bush-walking, camping, fishing, diving, surfing or kayaking forays into the chain of national parks which stretch to and across the NSW border.

The town itself boasts a Historical Museum, a Rainforest Interpretive Centre and the Slab Hut Information Centre which stands in front of an old pump house.

Orbost - named for the first cattle run in the area settled by a Scot who hailed from a village of the same name on the Isle of Skye - and Cape Conran stand at the western end of the Bataluk Cultural Trail which stretches from Sale in the east through Stratford, the Mitchell River National Park, Metung, Lake Tyers and Buchan. The trail follows the old colonial routes and focuses on the stories of the Dreaming and Aboriginal history and culture.
