Eagle Point

The hamlet of Eagle Point is near the coast, just a 10-minute drive east of Bairnsdale in Victoria's East Gippsland district.

Part of the area's appeal is its proximity to Lakes Entrance and the attendant wilderness region.

An attractive town and commercial centre for the region"s farmers, Bairnsdale's history is faithfully recorded in photographs, displays and memorabilia housed in the museum which occupies a building which dates back to 1891.

The Mitchell River discharges into Lake King at Eagle Point, where you will find the world's second longest silt jetty.

Woollen garments and craft are displayed for sale at the Jolly Jumbuk Country Craft Centre just a few kilometres out of town, while the picture-postcard fishing village of Metung lies a little more than 20km east of Bairnsdale on Lake King's shoreline.

A number of charter cruisers operate out of Metung where Bulls Marine Industries - launched by local paddle-steamer pioneer Captain James Bull in the 1870s, is still going strong. Lakes Entrance, the immensely popular resort which stands at the northern end of Ninety Mile Beach, is just another 12km further on from Metung.
