Bremer Bay
Located on the southern coast, seven hours drive south east of Perth and 180 kilometres east of Albany, is the town of Bremer Bay. The town is rapidly becoming a popular fishing and holiday town. Bremer Bay offers spectacular beaches with a variety of activities including fishing, whale watching from July to November, swimming, surfing, museums and much more. The town was named by Surveyor General John Septimus Roe in honour of Sir James Gordon Bremer, Captain of the Tamar, which sailed into Bremer in 1848. Bremer Bay is located at the mouth of the Bremer River, on the Wellstead Estuary, named after the first settler of the area, John Wellstead. Bremer Bay's focal point is the Fisheries Beach Marina. It is used by the professional fishing industry and also offers excellent facilities for recreational boat launching and offers sheltered swimming in the natural bay. Wellstead Museum is situated three kilometres south of Bremer Bay, it is the original settlement in the region, and was built in 1850 of local stone and burnt lime. The museum includes viewing of homestead outbuildings, artefacts and antiques. Quaalup Homestead Wilderness Retreat is situated approximately 45 kilometres from Bremer Bay in the Fitzgerald River National Park. The heritage listed homestead was built in 1858 and guests can enjoy nature walks with views to West Mount Barren and many species of wildflowers, or wake up to the bird calls, dream away under star studded skies and explore the Fitzgerald River National Park attractions with comfortable distances. Other attractions of Bremer Bay include excellent fishing, surfing, swimming and scuba diving. From July to October each year Southern Right whales can be seen calving in the calm waters of the many sheltered bays around the area and at times are as close as only six metres away.
