Kojonup is located on the Albany Highway two hours drive from Perth and 160 kilometres from Albany. Historic Kojonup is more than just a gateway to the beautiful southern areas of Western Australia. In the heart of Kojonup is the freshwater spring which first attracted European settlers to the town in 1837. Overlooking the spring are the Old Military Barracks, one of the oldest surviving military buildings in Western Australia. Kojonup has a long proud history, stretching back centuries to the days when nomadic Aboriginal people were first attracted to the area by the freshwater spring and an abundance of game. Even the name Kojonup has a historic significance, referring to the 'Kodja' or stone axe made by Aborigines from the local stone of the area.
