Broomehill

Down Katanning way at the very heart of the Great Southern region of WA, about 296km south-east of Perth, Broomehill is a small town servicing surrounding mixed farming and grain-growing ventures.

When gold was discovered at Coolgardie in 1893, a walking track was established between Broomehill and Coolgardie –some 450 km – that optimistic diggers would trudge along in search of their fortunes.

One John Holland was the man who led the way, and now Holland's Track is commemorated by a memorial in town.

The major town of Katanning, just 19km north-west of Broomehill, is home to a large stock saleyard and an abattoir at which livestock is slaughtered according to Halal procedures so that it can be sold to the Middle East.

Many Christmas Islanders who came to work at the abattoir settled here and built a mosque, and Katanning now hosts regular celebrations of Muslim festivals.
