Green Range

Down Albany way in the far south of the state, about 400km from Perth, Green Range is a little farming town in the midst of some of the most beautiful countryside imaginable.

It's not far from here to wonderful places such as Albany itself, on the shores of King George Sound, one of WA's most picturesque cities and a wonderful surfing and fishing destination.

About a half-hour's drive from Green Range is the delightfully serene coastal town of Cheyne"s Beach, now a great whale-watching spot. But it"s not so long ago that it hosted WA's last whaling station, now open to visitors as a museum.

And that"s not Cheynes Beach"s only claim to fame (or infamy). History records that it was the habit of whalers to leave live hares and rabbits on islands as a source of food in case of shipwrecks, and the whalers from here are suspected of engaging in just that practice.

The Waychinicup Nature Reserve, not far from Green Range, is a renowned bird-watching site.
