Camp Hill

As today's truckies have their favourite road stops, the teamsters and bullockies of yesteryear also tended to gather at selective spots where they rested and watered their stock.

For the teamsters and bullock drivers hauling timber and produce from the eastern and southern reaches into colonial Brisbane it was a water hole at the bottom of a hill about half a day's run from the town centre.

Thus, when settlement began, it was predictable that the fledgling suburb should be called Camp Hill. Since the early days, when mainly German settlers established vineyards and dairy farms in the area, Camp Hill has grown into one of Brisbane's most desirable residential suburbs.

Camp Hill and neighbouring Carina Heights share territorial claims to White Hills Reserve and Pint Mountain Reserve. White Hill was originally settled in 1873 by Robert White who built a camera obscura on his 160ha bush property. The "camera" produced a 360-degreee, reflective view of the area and attracted many visitors.

Today"s visitors are drawn to 10 sports ovals and kilometres of walking tracks that meander through hills draped by scrub and dry rainforest.
