Cannon Hill

While the name Cannon Hill might conjure up the image of a skyline fortress standing guard over early Brisbane, there is no record of any shots being fired in anger from the heights of this inner suburb.

In fact, the name was coined by an imaginative Lands Department wallah who fancied that a couple of fallen trees resembled disabled cannon.

Although the cow bails and ploughs of the pioneer settlers have long gone, Cannon Hill maintains strong links with its agricultural past through abattoirs, meat-processing plants, and the CSIRO's meat research laboratory.

Jewel in the Cannon Hill crown is the Minnippi Parklands complex of 200ha of bush watered by Bulimba Creek. Named after Minnippi Rawlings, an Aboriginal elder who lived in the area in the second half of the 19th century, the park features a canoe trail which extends from the Brisbane River to Carindale.

The bushlands protect significant flora and wetlands that support waterfowl colonies of pelicans, egrets, moor hens, swans and, at various times, migratory birds.
