Carina
Journalist, author and local councillor Ebennezer Thorne gave the name of his daughter, Carina, who was something of a poet, to this inner-eastern suburb of Brisbane.
Along with neighbours from bordering suburbs, the citizens of Carina proved an inventive band in 1912 when, fed up with the lack of transport, they got together to build their own spur railway. Hauling two carriages, the council-supported Belmont Flyer ran from Norman Park through Seven Hills, Mt Bruce, City View, Mayfield and Belmont. The Railway Department, however, was not convinced the spur rail was such a good idea and the line closed in 1924 when the Government refused a request for public funding.
This is an inner-Brisbane region richly endowed with reserve and parkland, much of which flanks the banks of Bulimba Creek.
Several of the creek-side parts are equipped with play and picnic facilities, while the expansive Holmwood Farm bushland reserve is home to a colony of squirrel gliders and more than 50 species of birds.
