Capalaba
Capalaba, one-time staging post on the horse-drawn coach run from Ipswich to Cleveland, has become a focal point for environmentalists with the opening in 1997 of the Redlands Indigescapes Centre - Australia's first native plant arboretum.
The centre's objective is to train professional and backyard gardeners how to apply native gardening and landscaping techniques. The arboretum, which is quite close to the Capalaba shopping centre, integrates 14ha of bushland, park and picnic areas, interspersed with gardens displaying varying themes, aspects and soil profiles.
Capalaba's showcase historic home, The Pines, which was built on what is now Old Cleveland Road in the 1860s, was a base for US secret communications in World War II.
Capalaba is a core centre in the Redland Shire which flanks Moreton Bay to the south of Brisbane. The shire embraces a number of sub-tropical islands including visitor- and fisherman-friendly North Stradbroke Island.
Also popular are Coochiemudlo Island and the Southern Moreton Bay Islands group of Russell, Karragarra, Lamb, Macleay and Perulp which lie in the magnificent, protected waterway which stretches from Moreton Bay to the Broadwater on the Gold Coast.
