Chermside
For the first 30 years of its existence, the pioneers of this northern Brisbane suburb were too busy breaking in the land to worry about fancy names and were quite happy to be known as the folk of Downfall Creek.
The stream still flows through the area, but it is almost 100 years since the suburb carried its name, thanks to the intervention of the founding teacher of the Downfall Creek State School, James Youatt.
He felt the adopted name was inappropriate and in 1902 proposed something more dignified. Why, he asked, not Chermside in honour of the newly-appointed State Governor? And Chermside it has been ever since.
The suburb is within the Marchant Ward of the metropolitan area and is designated as one of the Brisbane"s major regional centres. Its public facilities include a swimming pool and its parkland embraces a walker- and cyclist-friendly green belt flanking Downfall Creek.
