Clayfield

From the time the clay pits which provided the stuff from which the bricks that built much of inner Brisbane were filled in and the area sub-divided in the late 1800s, Clayfield has been regarded as one of the city's better addresses.

At one time, the captains of commerce and absentee pastoralists felt it was socially obligatory to live in stately homes set on huge Clayfield blocks. The large estates have since given way to higher density housing, but Clayfield still retains much of its signature grace and affluence.

Kalinga Park, the suburb"s major reserve, is bisected by Kedron Brook and its open space is studded with stands of ancient timber and interesting rock formations alongside the creek.

The park has generous facilities including bike tracks, brook bridges, Scouts hut and sportsfield. It is a popular retreat for petanque enthusiasts and picnickers who can enjoy a quiet, brookside barbecue under shady trees.
