Ferny Grove

Folklore has it that tough old bullockies selected this poetic name for the glade where they chose to camp overnight to rest, feed and water their stock before facing the final leg of the gruelling supply run from the north to Brisbane. Their encampment on the boundary between Brisbane City and Pine Shire is still a favourite picnic spot.

Ferny Grove is also home to The Brisbane Tramway Museum and The Australian Woolshed, a microcosm of a dinkum Queensland sheep station which features shearing displays, a ram parade, bush bands and dancing, a damper lunch, and a craft shop. The Woolshed is operated by Dirranbandi sheep farmers, Ken and Margaret Mander-Jones.

A short walk from the railway station and shopping centre takes you to the Ferny Grove picnic ground, one of the few in Australia to provide a 1.2km circuit specifically for wheelchairs.

Flanked by both Kedron Brook and Cedar Creek, the reserve is a perfect spot for a picnic, particularly on a Sunday when family groups can combine a barbecue with a visit to the Ferny Grove markets.
