Nundah

When German missionaries led by Pastor C. Eipper arrived aboard the Isabella in 1838 to convert the Aborigines to Christianity, they turned to the Bible for inspiration in naming their small community 10km west of the Brisbane River mouth. Their choice of Zionshill ignored the word nunda, which the local Aborigines used to identify a series of water holes bordering the mission. The missionaries failed to cut much Christian ice with the blacks and resorted to farming. For their part, the Aborigines retained the name Nunda which was finally and officially bestowed on the German Station township in the 1890s. In modern Brisbane Nundah lies on the western perimeter of the airport, just off the Gateway Arterial Road - one of the city's major links to both the Sunshine and Gold Coasts. The neighbouring northern suburbs of Boondall and Nudgee Beach share both a Moreton Bay boundary and the 1000ha nature-based recreation area known as the Boondall Wetlands. The main access points to the area's tidal flats, mangroves, salt marshes, melaleuca swamps, open forest and woodlands are from Nudgee Point and the Wetlands Visitors Centre.
