Clifton

About 50 kilometres north of Warwick, Clifton has been built on part of one of the first of the great Darling Downs sheep stations which was opened up in 1840.

The town was established around a tavern and general store whose opening coincided with the arrival of the railway in 1869.

The area's prosperity was founded on wheat and Clifton's towering silos stand as mute testimony to justify the "million bushel wheat district" slogan.

The town is located just a few kilometres west of the New England Highway. Clifton celebrates October and spring with the annual Iris and Rose Show.

A short drive north takes you to Nobby, a small town which, along with neighbouring Greenmount, claims a close association with two of Australia"s most endearing characters, Snake Gully"s Dad and Dave, created by Steele Rudd (Arthur Hoey Davis) in the 1899 book, On Our Selection.

Davis based his observations of the day to day life in Snake Gully on his family"s experience on its farm selection between Nobby and Greenmount.

Rudd"s Pub doubles as a museum for both Steel Rudd and Nobby"s most famous daughter, Sister Elizabeth Kenny, a dedicated nurse whose work led to a revolutionary and successful treatment of poliomyelitis.
