Durong South

About 90km north-west of Kingaroy and the same distance north-east of Chinchilla, Durong South is a little town in the middle of what is primarily a cattle grazing region.

The locals are in the process of reclaiming some of their history by restoring as a museum the impressive Boondooma Homestead, which was the domestic and social heart of a huge cattle station, and are calling for donations of period pieces, machinery, furniture and the like to flesh out the project.

Nearby Boondoomba Dam, heavily stocked with native fish, is a popular spot for fishing, swimming and boating. The dam is fed by the Boyne River which, an hour"s drive to the north of Durong, merges with the Auburn and Burnett rivers on the southern fringes of Mundubbera.

The name Mundubbera has two meanings in the local Aboriginal language - "meeting place of the waters" or "footsteps in the trees". With a population of more than 1500, Mundubbera is at the heart of Queensland"s largest citrus fruit-growing region.
