The Federation homes of the upmarket suburb of Lorn complement the rich, early colonial fabric of much of the Maitland CBD directly across the Hunter River. Whereas Maitland, East Maitland and Morpeth were among the earliest white settlements on this stretch of the Hunter, Lorn was developed as a private subdivision around the turn of the 20th century.

Although almost 200 years have passed since freed convict Molly Morgan opened her euphemistically-named shanty pub, the Angel Inn, on an early stock route, the Maitland area retains much of the charm of colonial days. That charm is warmly reflected in the city"s stock of such magnificent early colonial buildings as Brough House and adjoining Grossman House - built as mirror images by rival merchants, Samuel Owen and Isaac Beckett; Aberglasslyn, an 1840s Regency home still overlooking the river; and Cintra, a gracious 1880s homestead now serving as a guesthouse.

And when you've had your fill of history and heritage buildings, you are within a short drive of the celebrated Hunter Valley vineyards and attendant restaurants and, in case you become tired and emotional, very comfortable lodges.
