Altona
On the inner shores of Port Phillip Bay, Altona is just 8 kilometres from the Melbourne CBD. At the end of Altona's main Pier Street shopping strip is Altona Beach, a popular spot for visitors and locals alike.
Close by is the area's most historic building, Altona Homestead, which was built by Albert Langhorne in 1842, used for council meetings from 1952 until the property was handed over to the Altona Historic Society.
Altona also boasts one of the most popular parks in the region - Cherry Lake in Millers Road, the home to hundreds of species of native and migratory birds which can be admired from an observation hutch. For the energetic, there's a 3.5 kilometre multi-purpose track which laps the lake and is used regularly by walkers, rollerbladers and cyclists. The lake lends itself to boaties, windsurfers and anglers. The Cherry Lake reserve is completed by gardens, a children"s playground, toilets and electric BBQ-equipped picnic grounds.
Altona borders historic Williamstown, Melbourne's first suburb and host to a stunning maritime collection which includes HMAS Castlemaine, a restored World War II minesweeper. Permanently moored at Gem Pier, the Castlemaine is now a museum where visitors can pore over a fascinating collection of nautical exhibits and naval memorabilia.
Williamstown also has a Historical Museum and a Railway Museum which features a display of magnificent old steam locomotives.
And it's just a hop step and a jump into the heart of Melbourne city and everything that this great metropolis of the south has to offer.
