St Albans

The north-west Melbourne metropolitan suburb of St Albans straddles the Maribyrnong River which is one of the major features of the City of Brimbank landscape. Other features of note include Kororoit Creek, woodlands and basalt escarpments riven by valleys.

With 150,000 people living in the 123 sq km city area, Brimbank is the largest municipality in the western region and the third largest in Greater Melbourne. The suburb of St Albans was originally laid out to an architectural plan in the Melbourne land boom of the 1880s when it was presented as an environmentally and climatically friendly residential precinct for professional people.

But along with the rest of the municipality it had to wait for the constant, post-World War II inflow of migrants to underpin Brimbank development as a major multicultural community.

Today more than 40 per cent of the population stems from a non-English-speaking background. The major cultural groups are Vietnamese, Maltese, Italian, Polish, Greek, Croatian, Macedonian and Filipino. The city is well-endowed with parks, the pick of which is Brimbank Park which was opened in 1976 as part of the Maribyrnong Valley Park.
