Altona North
Head west out of Melbourne's central business district for about 8 kilometres along the West Gate Freeway, take a left into Mullens Road and you'll find yourself in Altona North.
This neat little suburb, set back from Port Phillip Bay, gives easy access to one of western Melbourne's most delightful picnic spots at Cherry Tree Lake, where the birdlife abounds. Just down the road at Altona you'll find a popular beach, at the end of the Pier Street shopping strip, and historic Altona Homestead.
Located in the nearby Hobson Bay suburb of Spotswood, Melbourne"s Scienceworks is a visitor-friendly, indoor/outdoor, high-tech science centre where you can "race" Olympic 400-metres gold medallist Cathy Freeman, tackle the adventure playground or discover the historic sewerage pump.
Neighbouring Williamstown, Melbourne's oldest suburb, is graced by some quaint old seafront pubs, fishermen's cottages, churches and historic and railway museums.
